Trivial minutia

Happy Odd Day!

Strangely, having only odd numbers in the date is a rarity. It will only happen six times in a century. 5/7/09 - Do something odd today to celebrate! If you have a lot of time on your hands, you can even enter an odd contest. What will you do?

Friday Freebie

Oh--things are quiet around the studio. And dark. The power was out this morning. Thanks to Kerry's brother we found a very nice and reasonable electrician. The joys of living and working in a 120 year old home!

We won't stay quiet for long, we have a big show in a couple of weeks. Be sure to check it out!
Sorry for the silent week...we won't let it happen again... :)

Today's (better late than never) Friday Freebie:

Have a great weekend!

Friday Freebie - Families

Again, from the vintage postcard collection, two intersting family postcards. They always make me wonder....who are these people? where are they from? what did they become? What do you think? Maybe you believe this:

Some family trees bear an enormous crop of nuts.

Or maybe you believe this:

The family, that dear octopus from whose tentacles we never quite escape, nor in our innermost hearts never quite wish to.

Enjoy your weekend!

Friday Freebie

A few more vintage black and white photo postcards. These ones are curious. Is she a nurse or a nun?
What happened between photo one and photo two that changed her mood so drastically?

Friday Freebie

A couple of oddities from the black and white post card collection. These two definitely fill the "People are Strange" criteria. What's their story?

#1
(above) Eunice and her siblings were kicked off their cross-country train for a hosting a rowdy cribbage tournament and inciting the other passengers. They now find themselves in the middle of Iowa with no place to go, no luggage, and no food, except for the fruit basket that Bertha swiped from the dining car, and is now wearing on her head.

#2
Poor little Freddie, finds the punishment for swiping that tempting two-cent candy is baking bread in the boiler room. He'll never do that again!
(Both images come from vintage postcards. Right click the images to save them to your computer)

Friday Freebie

Another from the "People are Strange" lot. My question, why was this even made into a post card? Right click the image to save it to your computer. And of course, leave your own caption for the photo.

What is she the grown up Polly Flinders? The first female chimney sweep? What does she burn in that fireplace of hers?

Another gem from the "People are Strange" series. Right click the image to save it to your computer. Leave us a comment with your own interpretation of the photo.

Meet Elsa and Alma Fanning, "The Great Fanning Sisters!" They are awaiting the start of their synchronized fanning tour. Be sure to catch it when it comes to your town. They will be all the rage in towns like Frankenmuth, Michigan; Sugar Land, Texas; Joshua Tree, California; and Brooklet, Georgia. Their show will include singing, dancing, and of course, synchronized fanning.

Friday Freebie

To continue the "People are Strange" Series...

Here's another antique photo cards. These cards are real black and white photos, made into postcards and mailed. Rarely are the people's names on the cards. Sometimes the people are strange.

Here's today's Friday Freebie. Feel free to leave a comment with your caption for these interesting folks.

Never to be married, Agnes and her four sisters, Ethyl, Eunice, Henrietta, and Olga, were known about town as the Crazy Cat Hat Ladies.

Friday Freebie

In my mom's massive collection of vintage postcards are a number of antique photo cards. These cards are real black and white photos, made into postcards and mailed. Rarely are the people's names on the cards. Sometimes the people are strange.

For today's Friday Freebie, I have two lovely couples to share with you. Feel free to leave a comment with your caption for these interesting folks. (This is a fun game to play, Amy calls it Fantasy Family.) If you like these ones, who knows, maybe we'll put up some more.

Technical Help Question: Does anyone know why sometimes when you load a photo into a blog the reader can click on it to see it as a larger image, and sometimes the reader can't? I would like the photos to be accessible in that way, however I am about 50-50. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Friday Freebie

I love these old photo cards! This one comes from a undated, vintage photo postcard. What in the world are these guys doing? Who are they, the original ZZ Top?

comtemplation

I spend a lot of time making combinations.... thinking about color...

thinking about pattern...

thinking about texture...

What will all of these combinations become?

Friday Freebie

Another Friday Freebie. Right click the image to save it to your computer. The cloudy nature of this image is part of the postcard, I assume from age. This one is a postcard that was mailed in 1913 with a 1 cent stamp. It was sent to and from Worcester, Massachusetts.

These old photos always make me wonder about the people in them. Who were they? What did they do? Unfortunately the text on the back of the card doesn't give any information. What do you think?

This image would be great in a black & white project or reprinted as an invitation. Speaking of invitations, feel free to join us for coffee any Friday morning. We'd love to share our studio with you!

More Decor -- Black and White

Oh -- I feel like I have been absent. I have been an absent blogger, certainly. But, today, I return!
As Kerry told you in the last post, we both strive to live artful lives. What is an artful life? There are so many aspects I can think of; hanging fabulous, original art on the walls of your home; wearing unique clothing items; carrying a fun purse or tote bag; making art (for art's sake); owning a pair of crazy shoes (and wearing them); making and sharing beautiful food; choosing or making home accessories that reflect a sense of artful style. I am sure there are many more ways to let art filter into everyday life.

Taking pictures around my house, to look for the sense of artful life, I found myself in the bathroom. What, the bathroom?!? you may ask. Yes, even a bathroom can reflect a sense of art and style. I have used my guest bathroom as a display for various black & white objects and pictures that I already owned. It is amazing what an impact things can have when grouped together. I framed a number of old black & white photos and art pieces in black frames and hung them together. Some of the photos are family shots, some of them are vintage finds. The sketch is one my great uncle did. I love the overall effect.

I looked for a tissue box that would complement the vintage theme. I had no success. Why buy one, when I could make one? Using a wooden tissue box from Michael's Craft store, and vintage images from Dover Publishing, Somerset, and others, I created this box. I love it! It really completes the look I was trying to achieve. The candle is one I made, also. I used black and white tissue paper on a tall white, prefilled candle.

I, too, will continue to look for ways to let art be a focus in my life. As I find those ways, I will share those worthy of photos. In what ways to you live an artful life? Let us know how you express your creativity.
